Holiday Entitlement for Nannies (full-time)

Provided by AthleteMannies and Nannies

At AthleteMannies and Nannies, we believe in promoting a healthy work-life balance for all our nannies. As part of your employment rights in the UK, you are entitled to paid annual leave. Below is a clear breakdown of how holiday entitlement works for full-time nannies, including how holidays are typically arranged between families and nannies.

📌 Statutory Holiday Entitlement

For a full-time nanny working Monday to Friday (5 days per week), the statutory minimum paid holiday entitlement is:

  • 28 days per year (which may include bank holidays).

This is calculated as:

  • 5 working days/week × 5.6 weeks = 28 days.

If your contract includes bank holidays, they count toward your 28 days. If bank holidays are excluded, you’re entitled to take the full 28 days as annual leave in addition to bank holidays.

📅 Splitting Holidays: Family vs Nanny

It is standard practice for holiday scheduling to be shared between families and nannies. A common arrangement is:

  • 50% of annual leave is chosen by the family, often aligned with their own travel plans.

  • 50% is chosen by the nanny, subject to appropriate notice and mutual agreement.

While families may encourage nannies to take holidays during school breaks (to minimise disruption to the children’s routine), this is at the family’s discretion unless otherwise specified in the employment contract.

✅ Best Practices & Recommendations

To ensure smooth holiday planning:

  • Your employment contract should clearly state:

    • The total number of paid holiday days.

    • Whether bank holidays are included or additional.

    • How holidays are split between the family and nanny.

    • Any preferences regarding term-time leave.

    • Required notice periods for requesting leave.

  • Keep a shared record of holidays booked and taken.

  • Confirm agreed holiday dates in writing to avoid misunderstandings.
